Last night the 40th Annual People’s Choice Awards aired live at the Nokia Theatre L.A. in Los Angeles and was hosted by my 2 favorite Broke Girls, Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs. Considering it was their first time hosting, Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs barely missed a beat on the People’s Choice Awards stage on Wednesday night. The “2 Broke Girls” actresses opened the show with a fun and topical sketch that brought them all the way from Williamsburg Diner to the Los Angeles stage. See more after the jump…
The opener begins with Dennings and Behrs, in character as Max Black and Caroline Channing, working hard at the diner, taking orders and dodging a flying shark, a reference to 2013’s popular “Sharknado.” After finishing her meal, “Big Bang Theory” star Kaley Cuoco realizes that she does not have enough money to pay her bill and tip her waitresses, so she gives them an invitation to host the People’s Choice Awards instead. Christina Aguilera selflessly offers to cover Max and Caroline’s shifts while they’re gone. The waitresses hitchhike from New York to Los Angeles with the help of out-of-control driver Walter White (Bryan Cranston). Dennings and Behrs arrive onstage, free of their yellow and red uniforms and ready to replace their order pads with microphones for a night.
Kat Dennings & Beth Behrs
The night’s co-hosts may be 2 Broke Girls in their day jobs, but they look like a million bucks at night, from arriving on the red carpet to some quick wardrobe changes throughout the evening.
Kat arrived on the red carpet wearing a strapless David Meister Signature ball gown with a notched-bodice that was sprinkled with a stenciling print of over-sized red roses. In keeping with the romantic, theatrical theme of the dress, she wore a dark berry lip stain and styled her dark brunette locks into loose curls, which were topped with a glittering headband. She skipped the necklace, yet showed off a pile of statement bracelets and a ring. The one accessory for which she probably had not planned were the gauze bandages that decorated her right hand—she suffered a bit of an accident with a knife over the weekend—although she strategically kept that hand rather hidden in the folds of her skirt.
Beth Behrs arrived wearing a sleek strapless black and white Giulietta gown with a paneled skirt from the Spring 2014 collection showcasing a huge spring trend. She paired the simply chic gown with strappy Rene Caovilla pumps and Deco-inspired jewelry by David Webb. She completed the look with a soft up-do and a bright pink lip.
Kat kicked off the show in an Oliver Tolentino Couture strapless, peplum-waist frock in the most engaging shade of saturated amethyst. The colour was beautiful against her alabaster skin tone, dark wavy locks and magenta lip. Beth truly glittered, too, in an adorable, crystallized Kate Spade New York ‘Estelle’ white paired with flashy silver heels. Her blonde curls and pink lipstick made this leggy look both girly and glam.
Swerving from violet vixen to all-out vamp, Kat covered up in a Ted Baker London jumpsuit with a peekaboo keyhole detail. She also swapped in a deeper oxblood lip. Meanwhile, Beth maintained her mini-dress mode, this time trotting out a fun, fringed metallic gold number that was equal parts flapper and Studio 54.
Adding a formal flair to that all-black vampiness, Kat changed into a Black Halo Eve off-the-shoulder peplum gown, accented with a sparkling, embellished waistband. Contrasting her dark statement, Beth was in a lighter mood with her creamy lace mini-frock from Naaem Khan’s Resort 2014 collection. Still showing off those legs, she finished the look with a pair of strappy, silver Jimmy Choo ‘Lance’ sandals and a ponytail ‘do.

The singer walked down the 2014 People’s Choice red carpet in a captivating body-skimming white KaufmanFranco dress from the Spring 2014 collection, a shortened version of the original runway rendition. Impossibly flattering, the wrapped silhouette was minimally effortless yet oh-so-sleek, to which she added some edge with a statement watch and cocktail rings along with white, ankle-wrap sandals. The finishing touch of added perfection was that matte, hot neon-pink lip and her desert-bronze eye shadow. Proving her beauty both inside and out, Jennifer took home the ‘Favorite Humanitarian’ award.
Sandra Bullock arrived wearing a floral Peter Pilotto Resort 2014 dress that featured a happy mix of grass-green, white and navy petal-like pieces, overlaid over a sky-blue lining while accented with the geometric swath of a white waistband and accessorized the look with a matching dark-blue Jimmy Choo ‘tube’ clutch and chartreuse Kurt Geiger heels that complemented the hues of the dress. She won for Favorite Movie Actress, Comedic Movie Actress, Movie Duo, and Dramatic Movie Actress.
After recently tying the knot in bright pink, Kaley Cuoco opted for a different hue, picking a cobalt blue and black combo. Her long, box-pleated skirt, in an intoxicating shade of cerulean, featured a peekaboo, lattice-stitched floral motif. Rather than follow the runway’s styling, she exchanged the white tunic top for a more tailored, tucked-in black tank. She accessorized with just a few beaded and tied bracelets, styling her blonde locks into bedhead waves and sweeping on a smoky, kohl-rimed eye. Kaley took home the award for Favorite Comedic TV actress.
The ‘The Vampire Diaries’ actress wore a silver Giorgio Armani gown with a stone-encrusted bodice and leather belt detailing. This dress is simultaneously sophisticated and sexy, and I love it. The stone detailing and silver color are elegant, while the leather straps and plunging neckline are daring and fun. Her strappy Jerome C. Rousseau ‘Popp’ shoes were the perfect compliment to the dress, and her jet-black eyeliner and simple chignon are perfection.
Adelaide Kane, star of Reign, is wearing a Rhea Costa dress with a mostly sheer bodice and a structured top that resembled a corset, Brian Atwood shoes, a gorgeous teal textured Helmer clutch, and Sophia Jewelry. She took home a People’s Choice award for New TV Drama for her CW show Reign.
The ‘Girls’ star and fashion lover wore a David Koma Spring 2014 halter sheath dress with netted sheer panels at her midriff with strong contrasting colors and cutouts at the waist. The royal blue shade and futuristic details on the dress really popped on the red carpet, and the shorter length was quite appropriate for the more laid back awards ceremony. She wore EF Collection earrings and Christian Louboutin ‘Air Chance’ tri-colour slingbacks. She stuck with the trends by pulling her hair into a low slightly edgy ponytail, and kept the look casual keeping a section loose in the front. Dark-lined eyes and glossy pink lips completed her look.
Funny lady Anna Faris skipped the dress and sparkled her way down the red carpet in a glimmering beaded ivory two-piece Naeem Khan Spring 2014 pantsuit instead. She paired the ensemble with Jimmy Choo ‘New Gael’ platform sandals and simple EF Collection jewelry. Her simple ponytail and subtle makeup with a pale pink lip with a coordinating frosty box clutch were also perfectly suited with the simply yet elegant style of the suit.
Britney Spears showed off her newly platinum locks and super-toned bod, from her Vegas show Miss Britney Jean, in a flirty and flattering lacy Mikael D Pre-Fall 2013 mini that featured illusion long sleeves with silver rose applique detailing over a nude-lining that added something whimsy to the romantic look. She kept the accessories completely minimal–Giuseppe Zanotti nude pumps and just a few simple rings and dainty earrings. She won for Favorite Pop Artist.
Drew Barrymore was glowing as she clothed her burgeoning baby bump in a Vionnet Spring 2014 dress with a white, T-shirt-style bodice and a skirt blanketed in light layers of lemon-yellow chiffon. Irene Neuwirth jewels, including a pair of gemstone earrings, dressed up her more casual, breezy look, which she completed with a Kara Ross clutch and Roger Vivier shoes. And, nothing like the added punch of a bold coral-red lip from her make-up collection Flower called ‘Get To the Poinsettia’ kiss in a stick velvet lip colour for good measure.
The ‘Bones’ star wore a Grecian inspired geometric-printed Max Azria gown that featured gentle pleats and draping with subtle black, white and dusty pink color-blocking. Her Edie Parker clutch and Swarovski ring and earrings complete the Gatsby-esque art deco style and are perfectly suited to the gown. Her blue-tinged smokey eye adds additional drama to the look, while her simple chignon lets the makeup and styling remain center stage.
The supermodel and ‘Project Runway’ host chose a sparkling beaded gown from the Giorgio Armani Fall 2013 collection with a plunging deep V neckline to show off her renowned assets. The crystal accents and shoulder detailing add visual appeal to the gown while her bejeweled Lorraine Schwartz earrings and embellished Christian Louboutin ‘Artifice’ pumps add even more ‘wow’ factor. Heidi’s hair is sleeked back into an elaborate hybrid braid/twist, and she kept her lipstick simple, but went for the drama with her eyes.
Jessica Alba was a vision in white Jason Wu Spring 2014 second-skin bandage dress that hit respectably right at the calf. The true drama was in the details here, as the strapless, front-zipper dress visibly traced the subtle, yet sexy lines of its corset structure and boning. It also laced up the sides for added sultry appeal. The monochrome vibe continued with white Casadei ‘Blade’ pumps. Adding even more spark to the look, Jessica carried a shiny metallic Rodo clutch and piled on the gold rings—nearly one for every finger— Eva Fehren bracelet, Jennifer Meyer earrings and rings and Dionea Orcini midi ring, which only highlighted her lacquered, dark-green manicure. Of course, her bronzed glow was also a major accessory—that and her super-sleek locks and a frosty pink lip that contributed a fun pop of colour.
The ‘Pretty Little Liars’ starlet wore an asymmetrical, one-shoulder sheath dress that hit right below the knee from Gabriela Cadena’s Spring 2014 collection in a painterly, abstract photo-negative print of exploded flowers. Taking the dress’s black sequin shoulder embellishment into consideration, she paired the dress with a crystallized black clutch and similarly sparkling, black Jerome C. Rousseau ‘Aizza’ pumps, also accessorizing with a range of jewels from Dana Rebecca Designs, EF Collection and Graziela Gems. She completed the pretty picture with a loosely tied, low updo with face-framing tendrils, along with a smokey bronze eye and rosy mauve lip.
Malin Akerman’s artsy black and white scribble print Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2014 dress was still fit for a siren which naturally featured the label’s signature sexy cutouts with a serious scoop neck and T-bar that flashed some skin. She styled the look with a black clutch and vampy black, ankle-strap pumps and a smattering of Stephen Webster jewels. Her hair was center-parted with platinum-blonde ringlets.
The ‘Big Bang Theory’ star and nominee wore a bright pink, strapless Rubin Singer gown with asymmetrical ruching. She kept her hair casual by pulling just part of it up and leaving the rest in loose waves and letting her thick fringe take center stage. Her glowing skin, bold eyes and pink lips complete this sweet, girly look.
Naya Rivera wore a formfitting color-block Michael Kors Resort 2014 long-sleeve dress that featured a nude top, white middle, and black bottom with a high-low hem for a seriously sexy look. Blush-nude Stuart Weitzman sandals, in combination with the flash of a gold collar necklace and sultry nude makeup hues to compliment her new hair color that completed her entrance. She won for Favorite TV Gal Pals along with Glee cast mate Lea Michele, who was not in attendance.
Our fave ‘The Vampire Diaries’ girl dazzled in a full-coverage Jenny Packham Fall 2013 turtleneck and long-sleeve design where the right side of this black, body-con confection was encased in a shimmering sea of silver glittery embellishment. Her accessories included a Rauwolf clutch, a pair of silver, ankle-strap platform sandals that only added to the shine factor, while she edged up all that glitz with an intricate updo that was a back-braided interpretation of a faux-hawk. She won an award for Best On-screen chemistry with her Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder.
The Queen, who scored the Favorite New Talk Show Host trophy, took a simple sartorial approach to the evening. She wore a black Angela Dean long-sleeve dropped-waist dress that featured a loose silhouette with Grecian-inspired draping and some black heels. She went with a dramatic oxblood lip, some fun metallic nail polish, along with emerald-tinged statement earrings and black ankle-strap peep-toe heels.
The singer and performer wore a Jill Stuart Fall 2013 laser cut dress with shirt sleeve and collar accents. A white Charlotte Olympia clutch and black Moschino pumps with red accents completed her fashion look. Her hair bow, beachy waves, red accent nail, and red lips round-out her girly-yet-sophisticated turn on the carpet.
Sarah Michelle Gellar
The beloved television actress and star of the new show ‘The Crazy Ones’ wore a feminine, flowing black and white Sachin + Babi Spring 2014 dress with gold beaded halter neckline, a pleated skirt and draped bodice. Basic black pumps, smokey eyes and baby pink lips completed her lovely look. She won for Favorite Actress in a new TV series.
The ‘Castle’ star wore a dramatic long-sleeved Naeem Khan gown from the Spring 2014 collection with velvet accenting and the long-sleeves. A center-parted low chignon, brown-smokey eyes and glossy nude lips were the perfect accent to the gown, as they kept things romantic yet simple and really let the dress make its mark. She won for Favorite Dramatic TV Actress.
